Key Medicare Enrollment Windows to Know
Timing is Everything
When it comes to Medicare, timing isn't just important—it's everything. Missing a crucial enrollment window can result in lifelong penalties or a gap in coverage. Here are the main periods you need to know.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your IEP is a 7-month window that surrounds your 65th birthday. It includes the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after. This is your first opportunity to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Running from October 15 to December 7 every year, the AEP is when anyone with Medicare can make changes to their coverage for the following year. This is the time to review your current plan and see if it still meets your needs.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
Life doesn't always happen on a schedule. If you experience certain qualifying events—like moving out of your plan's service area or losing other insurance coverage—you may be granted a Special Enrollment Period to make changes outside of the standard windows.
Keeping track of these dates is vital to protecting your health and your wallet.
