The Enrollment Periods That Matter

IEP

Initial Enrollment Period

A 7-month window around your 65th birthday: 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and 3 months after. This is generally the best time to act.

SEP

Special Enrollment Period

If you have qualifying coverage through an employer, you may be able to delay without penalty and enroll later when that coverage ends.

AEP

Annual Enrollment Period

Runs October 15 – December 7 each year. This is for people already on Medicare who want to make changes to their coverage for the upcoming year.

GEP

General Enrollment Period

Runs January 1 – March 31. This is for those who missed their Initial Enrollment Period. Note that late enrollment penalties may apply.
